Lock 23 is the starting point of the longest and best preserved part of the canal. All locks up to number 72 are still water-bearing. Some of them are still (or again) in functional

Berching is about 1100 years old. In the photograph the Krapfengate built during the 13th century. "Krapfen" is the German word for cruller or doughnut.
